Medical Students Honor Body Donors

Students and faculty of Mississippi's largest medical school are thanking those who donated their bodies to science. MPB's Daniel Cherry reports how a donation now can save countless lives in the future. University of Mississippi medical students showed their appreciation to family and friends of those who left their bodies to research. First year student, John Bridges, says the hands-on education he's receiving will stick with him the rest of his life. "Textbooks can spend paragraphs explaining a 3-D structure and how things twist around and turn, but until you get your hands on it, you really don't know what it's like." As the state attempts to address major health care issues, Dr. LouAnn Woodward, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs with UMC says programs like this are needed to ensure Mississippi's future doctors are getting the best education available. "It is very important for us to have a quality education program, and for them to stay in the state and take care of Mississippi citizens." Mississippi is last in the nation for doctors per capita. Medical school leaders say as UMC expands classes to address that issue, more body donations will be necessary.
